Just days from graduating at the top of his recruit class last May, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Nathaniel Afolayan collapsed during a training exercise in the New Mexico heat, and later died.

Because the 29-year-old resident of San Jacinto in Riverside County was to be stationed in Murrieta, his name was added Monday to the memorial honoring fallen Riverside County peace officers. In an emotional ceremony, his commander told a large crowd of the mark he left behind.

VRP Grievance Settled on Courthouse Steps

Facing another near-certain arbitration loss, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) attorney requested a meeting with the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) to discuss settlement for the grievance over the Voluntary Relocation Program (VRP). The parties were scheduled to meet on June 18, 2009 before an arbitrator. Fortunately, Labor and Employee Relations personnel did not play a major role in the settlement discussion, which allowed Border Patrol Management and the Union to reach a fair and equitable settlement in a short amount of time. We look forward to conducting business in a similar manner in the future.

In Memoriam - Harold Newton

The National Border Patrol Council - Local 1613 is deeply saddened to report that Harold Newton, brother of Border Patrol Inspector Theodore L. Newton, Jr., passed away on June 11, 2009 at approximately 2:18 p.m.

VRP and in-sector (SDC) relocations

Local 1613 recently heard how Chief Fisher attended a muster at the Chula Vista Border Patrol Station (BPS) on March 25, 2009 and conducted a formal discussion with bargaining unit members. During the formal discussion, an agent asked about relocations within the San Diego Sector (SDC), and Chief Fisher told the agents who were present that the Voluntary Relocation Program (VRP) addresses in-sector relocations.
